When I first thought about raising hogs, my mind immediately pulled up a picture of pigs mucking about and dripping in a puddle of mud. Why is that? I think this is an image we have all seen growing up, whether we were familiar with the farming life or not. And I can’t recall how many times I’ve heard the old saying, “As happy as a pig in mud.” The image seems to be a constant and common representation for the hog lifestyle. It’s something we have come to expect because it’s just what pigs do.
So why do pigs wallow? The answer is simple. Wallowing in the mud helps the animals cool down when it’s too hot. In the Summer, you will see hogs wallowing constantly in an attempt to bring down the heat. And all I can say is, when it is so hot in the summer…..who can blame them?
